An earlier reflection on Dance People
Dance People aims to draw a progressive artistic and collective narrative that conveys creativity through values of sharing, generosity, hospitality, and openness. Culture is not an isolated action. On the contrary, today’s culture is a “daily practice of hope,” a value that enables us to overcome the major difficulties of our world. Culture is a space for dialogue, openness, reflection, exploration, solidarity, care, and joy.
From this perspective, dance becomes about “coming together” and aiming towards a creative philosophy of “sharing the space.” To “come together” is the courage to cultivate “doing together,” to de-compartmentalize culture and communities, but above all to open the doors of artistic creativity to the greatest number of citizens.
Mia Habis and I have always questioned these boundaries within our personal artistic parcours as artists and programmers. We have both played a double role: creating performances while at the same time being involved in developing frameworks of presentation. This history of double roles is questioned by both of us today, and our experience over twenty years of creation and curation has led us to question our position and approach to dance and performance.
In this sense, this creation envisions a transformative dance project dedicated to exploring new formats of artistic expression, community dynamics, and audience engagement. It seeks to redefine the conventional paradigm of presenting dance, shifting the emphasis from “visual aesthetics” in traditional venues to dynamic “action aesthetics” in adaptable, non-dedicated performance spaces, fostering a shift from mere observation to active participation. It invites artists and audiences to co-create and explore new dimensions of artistic expression and communal experience, embodying the spirit of innovation and collaboration in the pursuit of a dynamic and transformative art form.
