Each evening features two artists who will share a 10-minute studio presentation, revealing the ideas, questions, and gestures that shape their work. Following the presentations, a conversation with the audience will be moderated by Manolis Tsipos — opening up space for reflection, exchange, and shared curiosity.

Meeting the Artists | Studio Presentations & Conversations

In this reflective conversation, choreographer Omar Rajeh opens a space to question the aesthetics of action—not as representation, but as a force that shapes presence, meaning, and ‘becoming’. How does dance become a site for gathering, for cultural imagination, and for rethinking the dynamics of space and participation? Through this workshop, participants are invited to explore action as a form of thinking, and choreography as an opening toward collective possibilities.

Anyone who has ever sought to achieve a goal knows the importance of technique. That is why, before considering a show, it is essential to plan a method for rehearsing. In this seminar, each participant will explore different approaches to stage creation with the aim of developing their own methodology. The session includes a theoretical introduction, a practical segment where participants will create their own proposals, and a scenic section where I will share my personal processes.

This workshop introduces transmedia design, media spaces, and interactive technology in movement-based practices. Through case studies, discussions, and conceptual exercises, participants will explore how choreography can extend beyond the body using media. Together, we will analyze works integrating motion tracking, sound, projection, and generative systems, then develop new ideas through guided creative exercises. No prior tech experience needed.

Embodied Media  Exploring Transmedia Design & Interactive Technology in Choreography

We immerse ourselves in the flamenco universe to bring out everything we
carry inside.
In choral formation we will enter the rhythm with tangos, clapping and vocal
voice and jaleos... We will dance it from the minimum impulse to its maximum
expression. How do we dance flamenco on the floor, and on the wall?
To finish we will do a simple and fun choreography where we will reflect
everything that has been practiced.
Aimed at anyone who experiments with movement.
Comfortable clothing and flamenco accessories (shawl, fan, skirt, flowers) are
required.

This conversation opens a reflection on the evolving meaning of dramaturgy today, the ways artists meet and exchange, and the unspoken structures that shape the field — from hidden hierarchies and ethics of collaboration to the ongoing work of building communities. Touching on the Socratic Dialogue and the DasArts Feedback Method, the discussion points to new possibilities for mentorship, feedback, and shared responsibility, all in response to the pressing question: how to continue working in times of, and after, catastrophe.

Meeting each other in the field

Theater is the collective elaboration of a working hypothesis that only happens when, after leaving the show, the awareness of not having fully played the audience's role blends with the intuitive sense of the many ways it could have been done better. In a world where participation is a fact but is almost never real, theater faces the difficult task of deploying a participation that manages to become real without necessarily being a fact—or precisely because it is not. USE AND ABUSE PARTICIPATORY THEATER IN THE ERA OF MANDATORY  PARTICIPATION 

Two women eat sunflower seeds in a park, a doorway and a courtyard. They share a common space, a conversation, the intimacy of silence. The cante (singing) and baile (dancing) suddenly burst forth, transforming the mundane scene into a magic intimate spectacle. 

A Taranto is a palo (form) of flamenco originally from the mining area of Almería. It’s a primitive song, simple, dry, without guitar, which was born from the need to sing independently. In Taranto Aleatorio (Random Taranto), choreographer and dancer María del Mar Suárez/LaChachi and singer Lola Dolores embark on their personal take of this palo’s stark rawness. By taking a random approach, the dancer and singer embrace irreverent gestures and humour emerges.

Improvised encounters

In this session, the selected artists from Beirut will be introduced to the DasArts Feedback Method — a structured and creative way of exchanging feedback. Together, they will co-design the approach for the upcoming public presentations on Tuesday and Wednesday. During these evenings, each artist will share their work and receive feedback in a moderated format. The Beirut participants will also take an active role in guiding the audience through the process, helping to create a thoughtful and engaging space for dialogue.

The DasArts Feedback Method A toolkit for reflection

"How Am I Here?" Mey Seifan & Slowfuture is a transmedial performance by choreographer Mey Seifan, exploring the recurring nightmare of Syrians in exile. It begins with an ideal return home, but quickly turns into panic with disappearing passports, checkpoints, and trapped escape routes. The dream blurs languages and memories of exile, cycling into fear until the dreamer wakes up.
Premiered in 2023, the performance gained new significance after the fall of the Syrian regime in 2024, as many exiles noticed the nightmare's sudden disappearance. Combining choreography, AI, and virtual reality, it immerses audiences in the emotional turmoil of exile and explores how to reshape subconscious fears and reclaim agency.
One of the first of its kind in the Arabic world, "How Am I Here?" has been successfully presented at international festivals, engaging audiences with its powerful, immersive experience.

Spectatorship as activity | The exchange between performance & spectator

The workshop will focus on the energetic and physical vocabulary of the Company, and particularly on Flow, the piece inspired by animal’s group movements, such as shoals of fish or flocks of birds, which toured in Bipod in 20xx. The choreographic process questions the laws of interactions between the members of a group and the coordination of their movements, suggesting new choreographic dynamics based on collective consciousness in space. The workshop will be run by Marco Cantalupo, and Csaba Varga, dancer and assistant at Linga.

Linga intensive tools and repertory workshop

The workshop residency will focus on exploring various movement improvisations that engage with the architecture, or structural aspects of a building, or location. It can be both inside and outside, or in its surrounding area. Using the body as a tool, we will examine and rediscover the subtle details of a chosen place. By collecting these details and fostering a dialogue between the architecture and the body, we aim to generate new interpretations of the site. How can we uncover and reconnect with the past memories embedded within the structure of a building, or a situated area? 
This conversation aims to reinterpret the site and its stories, fostering new insights into its history and present. Can we create scenarios where both concrete and abstract relationships with the site place us in suspended time pockets, which allows us to transcend linear time offering alternative perspectives on current times we´re living in right now?

The "How to Create in the Aftermath of a Catastrophe" roundtable explores the intersections of art, public space, and crisis. It examines how art professionals navigate creation during ongoing emergencies—not just as a response to destruction but as a way to cultivate hope, reinvent common spaces, and activate resistance through participation, debate, and sharing. It raises ethical questions about representation, spectatorship, and the risk of aestheticizing trauma while considering how artistic interventions can challenge dominant power structures. Participants will discuss how catastrophe redefines artistic urgency, how performance reclaims public space, and how creative interventions foster long-term political impact.
Can we envision performance as a site of solidarity, where ephemeral acts of togetherness shape new social and artistic possibilities and leave lasting impacts in societies shaped by destruction?

Telescope Beirut is a one-week initiative within the Creative Europe project, SHIFT. It offers a unique lens to explore, magnify, and discover new perspectives in dance and performance. Artists selected from across Europe and the Mediterranean will be accompanied by a group of professionals to advise, support, and inspire their ongoing projects.
Taking place for the first time in Lebanon, Telescope Beirut offers a dynamic week of dance workshops, talks, discussions, studio presentations, and select performances in non-conventional spaces.

This session online session will convene professionals from Lebanon, Palestine, and the regional countries to share experiences, project concepts as well as relationship dynamics and interaction between local dancers, cultural actors, and audience engagement.

Topic 1: Fostering Collaborative Partnerships in Dance Communities

Ioannis’ aim is to create on the spot a performance based upon the spectators’ ideas that will be thrown at him at the time of the performance. To collect, process and render the audience’s suggestions in the form of a dance, improvised instantaneous performance, hence its title. By involving the audience in the creative process, Ioannis offers a new perspective on the choreographic art, from the inside, which aims to help understand some of the rules and tools of the composition of a choreographic piece. From Scratch

When we look at each other, I forget if it's me who looks at you or who you look at.
The idea we have of ourselves is not that of an organism of living cells, but something else. We are a mental construction (opsychological) of abstract concepts that results in what we call the Self, or Ego. An Ego that is observed, reflected and materialized in the gaze of the other. An external look that acts as a mirror for us and is essential to evolve in life, but that, in imbalance with our own internal listening, results in an unbalanced, deformed and fragile evolution. Alexandre Roccoli draws his inspiration from the source of possession dances as they may have appeared in Morocco, particularly in the Gnaoua brotherhoods but also in certain more urban contemporary cultures, from hip hop to house music. By playing with the repetition of movements and sounds, Alexandre Roccoli produces a circular, hypnotic and magnetic aesthetic where the body is seized by the vertigo of dance. Between a state of grace and a state of shock, the energy and virtuosity of young Moroccan dancer Yassine Aboulakoul transmits a mad desire to dance.

A prison represents a powerful sentence of punishment and a forced limitation of freedom. Totalitarian regimes have used this establishment to subjugate free speech through intimidation and torture. 
How can such an experience affect the perception one has on its body, movements, and reactions. As a dancer, Bassam Abou Diab, attempts to embody the reaction of inhuman practices, leading to a world of fantasy, allowing the body to transcend into the supernatural. Dancing and dreaming in order to survive the pain.

In Nebula, Vania Vaneau approaches the human body-nature relationship as the meeting of force fields in a post-apocalyptic context. In a kind of archaeology of the future, Nebula questions what other relationships to time, craft, soil, and chimeras could emerge to draw a new cosmogony. What mutations and hybridizations could come out of chaos? Nebula is a crossing into the unknown, a moment of eclipse to glimpse at other possible worlds. Snakes and Ladders is an imaginary excursion, examining darkness, metaphorically, sensorially and symbolically. Hopelessly powerless bodies move, scan a dying city, try to read the future in the dark.
The film creates a duality between a human body and a concrete building - attempting to open pathways of perception by melting the fortifications of our constructed meanings – by observing matter and thought, in their raw form.

Turbulent flow is an expression of time and space. It was shot in the Lebanese mountains during a time of transition as well as economical and political instability in the country. There is a heaviness of some sort in the air, especially in the city. The mountains are high enough above it.
The rocks stand strong, seemingly eternally unhinged by the elements and variables, they are quite a nice refuge.

Artistic projects in process

In 2019, Omar Rajeh, the choreographer, begins a series of explorations that will lead him to unprecedented questions: The forced dismantling of Citerne Beirut, a performing arts space of which he is the founder, the political and economic collapse of Lebanon and the civil unrest after October 17th, followed by the global Covid-19 crisis, and finally the tragic explosion at the port in August 2020, which destroyed half of the city of Beirut, killing and injuring thousands of people.

What voice do we insist on having after being silenced? What body do we walk around with when we are drowned in pain? What do we do with our memories when they deceive us and fail to resemble reality? What hopes do we carry when we are far from our struggles and dreams?

It is in a context of political, economic and health crisis that ‘The Odor of Elephants After the Rain’ was created. It was shot in Beirut in 2021 shortly after the August 4th explosion. It testifies of the experience of deep-rooted pain, loss, and disillusion. Dear places reduced to ashes, disfigured memories, trampled dreams, and dashed hopes

How culture can formulate a discourse for political change while protecting itself from shifting into political propaganda. We look into cultural presence that is immersing itself in active and engaged actions, and shaping a logic of thinking with broader perspectives and possibilities of change.

We will start by awakening the body with breathing exercises working from the joints towards the movement, to be able to flow and unify the breath with the movement. We will continue investigating and looking for different ways of using the floor, working on different qualities of movement, dynamics, space. In the second part, we will work mainly on contact and improvisation with a defined concept to be able to investigate and develop other interpretive facets

The film The Unhearable Voices is an etude inscribed in a research that evolves around the mechanism of unconscious heritage carried in our bodies and voices.

The Unhearable Voices

As slipping out of the cloth of constantly fluttering flags, heraldic symbols take form and weight. Chimerical beings and oneiric figures appear, like leafing through an armorial or medieval bestiary. They seem to tell us stories of conflicts which took place in the well delimited perimeter of an emblematic battlefield.
ARA! ARA! is the designation of a symbol. The symbol of a rising power that chooses a bird to represent itself. Not a majestic and fearsome raptor like the eagle, an animal often used as a heraldic symbol of power. On the contrary, a bird that communicates fun and quietness by becoming, according to a popular western look, an exotic icon: the parrot ARA. Second part of a diptych started with AeReA, ARA! This 18th edition of BIPOD takes place in Lyon & Beirut, with a live streaming program on Citerne.live digital platform. We gathered a program of performances, videos, discussions, debates, experiences and conversations around the thematic of #cultural_disobedience. Opening a discussion about culture in relation to several artistic, social, and political concerns is an urgency today. How culture can intervene and engage in the social and political without losing its artistic drive and questions. And how much cultural dynamics are reflecting a scene of inclusion and equality. What does it mean to be an artist? A programmer? And what does it even mean to be an ‘active’ audience and why? It seems there is a vital need, on an artistic and curatorial level, to rethink our approaches to culture and question current operating dynamics. Our aspiration is to explore how inspiring ideas, that materialized themselves in theatres, festivals, companies, and collectives, can continue to rejuvenate, revitalize themselves, and serve their innovative purposes.

'In the silence of love you will find the spark of life' - RUMI 

This open Studio is a short presentation of the work process of Omar Rajeh's new creation that will premiere in November 2021 at Espaces des Arts – Chalon sur Soâne. Inspired by the Persian poet Jalal-al-Din Rumi’s love poems, Cent Mille Façons de Parler is a work about desire, passion, and extreme moments of love. Rumi serves, in this performance, as a starting point to explore the question of Love in its extreme, in its becoming a drive, a passion, and a way of life.

“A’alehom” is a solo performance that tells a story of loss, pain, physical abuse and revolt. It is about overcoming obstacles and shedding victimhood. Creating this performance has been a catalyst for life, a motive that kept Alexandre resilient in the face of the current political and socio-economic crisis hitting Lebanon.
“A’alehom” was born under layers of stress and melancholy that brought Alexandre close to burnout and surrender. This is exactly why it morphed into a journey of salvation, demonstrating once again the urgency of art creation and proving it to be a life necessity. Photo Patrick Baz

Evoking the Ephemeral is a conversation between a group of young Lebanese dancers that gathered around a creation process led by choreographer Corinne Skaff. The artists will share their experience in putting up a performance dealing with the Ephemeral and then carrying in their performing bodies the aftermath of the Beirut Explosion, a year of uprising and shattered social references. Heroes - Surface of a Revolution

For the 17th edition of BIPOD- Beirut International Platform of Dance, Maqamat company invites cultural partners in 8 different countries to co-curate and co-organize 'Architecture of a Ruined Body'.  This cultural project gathers artists, festivals and cultural venues in the Mediterranean and across Europe in order to question the body’s remaining possibilities, vulnerabilities, resilience or revolt, and simply its being in moments of crisis. It is an attempt to acknowledge that the world we live in is in a phase of global transformation and change. After the shocking social, political, and health incidents of 2019 & 2020, it seems inevitable that culture is at the forefront to question and be questioned, to explore and be explored, to renew thought and be renewed.

BIPOD 2021 | Architecture of a Ruined Body is organized from 16 May until 27 June in cooperation with Allianz Kulturstiftung, CND/Lyon,  CCN Bourgogne Franche-Comté à Belfort/ Viadanse, Les Subsistances, Taldans, Menhir, Sareyyet Ramallah, Dan.Cin.Lab, Egomio Cultural Centre, and Rézodanse.

Oyunu II  is an interdisciplinary performance that revisits an imagined event in the history of East Mediterranean queer culture. It is Inspired by the banned culture of the köçek, which flourished from the 17th to the 19th century and had its origin in the 'harems' of Ottoman palaces. Oyunu is an immersive concert experience, through the eyes of a male dancer, that features traditional songs, electronic music, & belly dance. By bridging between tradition and contemporary life, the concert subtly explores controversial themes: masculinity, homoeroticism & islam.

Noctilūca explores the potential re-appropriation of a lost wild layer of being. In the pursuit of a disciplined and controlled society, sparks of dynamism and life force have been dulled. Awakening the tamed and penetrating the unknown, I reunite with my body, in the sway of a primordial tune.

In the panel discussion “The Architecture of a Ruined Body” we are hoping to open a window of inspiration and motivation towards new possibilities of the future. Our main question for this panel will focus on “questioning the body in moments of crisis and disasters, questioning its remaining possibilities, vulnerabilities, resilience or revolt, and simply its being”. The body can refer to the actual human body, next to the society as a body, and the industry of culture as a body.

It was founded, by Maqamat (www.maqamat.org) in 2004, and has become one of the most awaited dance festivals in the region. It attracts around 5000 spectators each year and offers a rich international program of local and international performances, debates, video dance, conferences and workshops. From November 25 to December 1, the 16th edition of BIPOD will be hosted at Les Subsistances in Lyon and live streamed in real time from six different cities on www.citerne.live.

Is where you can explore and discover all the artistic and cultural events that will be live streamed. The events are listed individually in chronological date and time. If an event belongs to a festival or a specific program then it will be tagged with the name of the program/festival. You can search for events with specific categories, organizers, artists, or cities.

The listing in this page highlights the full program of different cultural institutions and/or festivals. Moreover, it highlights the cities where different events are taking place. From this page you can also access the individual city pages to discover other previous and future events that are, or were, programmed in the city. This pages highlights the full program of a festival or program and maintain its artistic vision and focus. Users will be able to access the festivals or specific programs and discover the performances, workshops, talks, and other activities of a festival or a cultural institution.

Each person mentioned on the Platform will have an individual page with a short biography and links to the artistic events, workshops, talks that s/he participated in. Not only artists are highlighted but also the wider community of people working around a performance, event or festival.

It is a space where recordings of live performances and/or video dance creations are stored after they are live streamed.
