Conceived as the final celebration of the European project SHIFT, this gathering reinvents the very notion of performance by questioning spatial hierarchies and dissolving the boundaries between stage and audience.

Bringing together choreographers, dancers, architects, poets, and thinkers from across Europe and the Mediterranean, Dance People – Le Happening becomes a living space of encounters, where artistic expression and civic participation enter into dialogue. Performances, laboratories, and collective explorations unfold throughout the city — in theatres, on esplanades, and in in-between spaces — transforming Lyon into a vibrant platform of movement, exchange, and coexistence.



Un festival international de danse sur trois jours qui place les artistes et les citoyen·ne·s au cœur d’une dynamique collective. Pensé comme la célébration finale du projet européen SHIFT, le festival réinvente la notion même de performance en remettant en question les hiérarchies spatiales et en abolissant la frontière entre scène et public.

Inferno (Hell) in Western culture is the place which more than others has inspired preachers, illustrators, painters, sculptors, storytellers, directors, musicians. It is the place of atonement for moral and material faults where the wicked are punished and good triumphs over evil. It is the place of subversion and chaos in the representation of which everything can coexist. However, a depiction of evil as the undisputed kingdom of a sulphurous devil with a tail, horns and pitchfork would be hardly credible today.
Hell is here, and it may look a lot like Heaven. It is what pushes us to make every effort to be more attractive, more intelligent, more powerful, more just, stronger, smarter, more responsible, more humble, which pushes us to compete for moral, social, economic and emotional gratifications. Hell is the inevitability of desire, the condemnation of perpetual competition in search of pleasure.
Hence the idea of Inferno, a tragedy in the form of comedy – seductive, pleasant, engaging, bright and fun – on the intrusiveness of the ego; both one’s own and others’.

As the title suggests, in the version that Roberto Castello brings to the stage at Fabbrica Europa, Inferno will be broken into pieces: INFERNO a pezzi #1, INFERNO a pezzi #2, INFERNO a pezzi #3. Highlighting the work of the performers, it will be presented just as it was created in the rehearsal room—the setting in which the choreographies exist in their optimal condition.

Inferno (Enfer), dans la culture occidentale, est le lieu qui, plus que tout autre, a inspiré prédicateurs, illustrateurs, peintres, sculpteurs, conteurs, metteurs en scène, musiciens. C’est le lieu de l’expiation des fautes morales et matérielles, où les méchants sont punis et où le bien triomphe du mal. C’est le lieu de la subversion et du chaos, dans la représentation duquel tout peut coexister. Cependant, une vision du mal comme royaume incontesté d’un diable sulfureux avec queue, cornes et fourche serait aujourd’hui difficilement crédible.
L’Enfer est ici, et il peut ressembler beaucoup au Paradis. C’est ce qui nous pousse à faire tous les efforts pour être plus séduisants, plus intelligents, plus puissants, plus justes, plus forts, plus malins, plus responsables, plus humbles, ce qui nous pousse à rivaliser pour des gratifications morales, sociales, économiques et émotionnelles. L’Enfer, c’est l’inéluctabilité du désir, la condamnation à une compétition perpétuelle dans la recherche du plaisir.
D’où l’idée d’Inferno, une tragédie sous forme de comédie – séduisante, agréable, engageante, lumineuse et joyeuse – sur l’intrusion de l’ego, le sien comme celui des autres.
Comme le suggère le titre, dans la version que Roberto Castello présente à Fabbrica Europa, Inferno sera fragmenté : INFERNO a pezzi #1, INFERNO a pezzi #2, INFERNO a pezzi #3. Mettant en lumière le travail des interprètes, il sera présenté tel qu’il a été créé en salle de répétition – le cadre dans lequel les chorégraphies existent dans leur condition optimale.

After its first explorations in 2024, SHIFT returns to Florence with a second phase marking a crucial moment in the project’s journey. As part of Fabbrica Europa 2025, this stage unfolds as a process in constant transformation, accompanying and supporting European and Mediterranean artists in imagining new scenarios for choreographic and performative creation.

This second phase focuses in particular on the relationship between performance, space, and audience, fostering a shared reflection on the value of heritage—urban, historical, architectural, emotional—in Florence as a living, dynamic material able to host and transform the artistic experience for spectators.

From last year’s explorations at the Parco delle Cascine, the Ciminiera di Novoli, and the Sant’Orsola monastery-in-progress, to Florence’s historic cloisters, the city becomes a laboratory where emerging and established artists confront new languages, formats, and modes of reception.






Après les premières explorations en 2024, SHIFT revient à Florence pour une seconde phase qui marque un moment clé dans le parcours du projet.
Dans le cadre de Fabbrica Europa 2025, cette étape se déploie comme un processus en constante transformation, accompagnant et soutenant des artistes européens et méditerranéens dans l’imagination de nouveaux scénarios pour la création chorégraphique et performative.

Cette seconde phase s’intéresse particulièrement à la relation entre la performance, l’espace et le public, nourrissant une réflexion collective sur la valeur du patrimoine florentin — qu’il soit urbain, historique, architectural ou émotionnel — envisagé ici comme une matière vivante et dynamique, capable d’accueillir et de transformer l’expérience artistique des spectateurs.

Des explorations menées l’an passé au Parco delle Cascine, à la Ciminiera di Novoli et au monastère en transformation de Sant’Orsola, jusqu’aux cloîtres historiques de la ville, Florence devient un véritable laboratoire où artistes émergents et confirmé·es expérimentent de nouveaux langages, formats et modes de réception.

In this reflective conversation, choreographer Omar Rajeh opens a space to question the aesthetics of action—not as representation, but as a force that shapes presence, meaning, and ‘becoming’. How does dance become a site for gathering, for cultural imagination, and for rethinking the dynamics of space and participation? Through this workshop, participants are invited to explore action as a form of thinking, and choreography as an opening toward collective possibilities.


Dans cette conversation réflexive, le chorégraphe Omar Rajeh ouvre un espace pour interroger l’esthétique de l’action — non pas comme représentation, mais comme une force qui façonne la présence, le sens et le devenir.

Comment la danse devient-elle un lieu de rassemblement, d’imaginaire culturel, et de reconfiguration des dynamiques de l’espace et de la participation ?

À travers cet atelier, les participant·e·s sont invité·e·s à explorer l’action comme une forme de pensée, et la chorégraphie comme une ouverture vers des possibles collectifs.

Anyone who has ever sought to achieve a goal knows the importance of technique. That is why, before considering a show, it is essential to plan a method for rehearsing. In this seminar, each participant will explore different approaches to stage creation with the aim of developing their own methodology. The session includes a theoretical introduction, a practical segment where participants will create their own proposals, and a scenic section where I will share my personal processes.

Through case studies, discussions, and conceptual exercises, participants will explore how choreography can extend beyond the body using media. Together, we will analyze works integrating motion tracking, sound, projection, and generative systems, then develop new ideas through guided creative exercises. No prior tech experience needed.

Cet atelier introduit la conception transmédia, les espaces médiatiques et la technologie interactive dans les pratiques basées sur le mouvement. À travers des études de cas, des discussions et des exercices conceptuels, les participants exploreront comment la chorégraphie peut s'étendre au-delà du corps en utilisant les médias. Ensemble, nous analyserons des œuvres intégrant le suivi des mouvements, le son, la projection et les systèmes génératifs, puis développerons de nouvelles idées à travers des exercices créatifs guidés. We immerse ourselves in the flamenco universe to bring out everything we
carry inside.
In choral formation we will enter the rhythm with tangos, clapping and vocal
voice and jaleos... We will dance it from the minimum impulse to its maximum
expression. How do we dance flamenco on the floor, and on the wall?
To finish we will do a simple and fun choreography where we will reflect
everything that has been practiced.
Aimed at anyone who experiments with movement.
Comfortable clothing and flamenco accessories (shawl, fan, skirt, flowers) are
required.

Nous nous immergeons dans l'univers du flamenco pour faire ressortir tout ce que nous portons à l'intérieur.
En formation chorale, nous entrerons dans le rythme avec des tangos, des claquements, des voix vocales et des jaleos... Nous le danserons du moindre impulse jusqu’à son expression maximale. Comment dansons-nous le flamenco au sol, et sur le mur ?

Theater is the collective elaboration of a working hypothesis that only happens when, after leaving the show, the awareness of not having fully played the audience's role blends with the intuitive sense of the many ways it could have been done better. In a world where participation is a fact but is almost never real, theater faces the difficult task of deploying a participation that manages to become real without necessarily being a fact—or precisely because it is not. Le théâtre est l’élaboration collective d’une hypothèse de travail qui ne se réalise que lorsque, après avoir quitté le spectacle, la conscience de ne pas avoir pleinement joué son rôle de spectateur se mêle à la sensation intuitive des nombreuses manières dont cela aurait pu être fait de manière plus réussie. Dans un monde où la participation est un fait mais est presque toujours illusoire, le théâtre fait face à la difficile tâche de déployer une participation qui parvienne à devenir réelle sans nécessairement être un fait—ou précisément parce qu’elle ne l’est pas. L'atelier est donc conçu comme un laboratoire de fictions sociales, où les participants peuvent explorer différentes hypothèses de fausse participation.

Two women eat sunflower seeds in a park, a doorway and a courtyard. They share a common space, a conversation, the intimacy of silence. The cante (singing) and baile (dancing) suddenly burst forth, transforming the mundane scene into a magic intimate spectacle. 

A Taranto is a palo (form) of flamenco originally from the mining area of Almería. It’s a primitive song, simple, dry, without guitar, which was born from the need to sing independently. In Taranto Aleatorio (Random Taranto), choreographer and dancer María del Mar Suárez/LaChachi and singer Lola Dolores embark on their personal take of this palo’s stark rawness. By taking a random approach, the dancer and singer embrace irreverent gestures and humour emerges.

In this session, the selected artists from Beirut will be introduced to the DasArts Feedback Method — a structured and creative way of exchanging feedback. Together, they will co-design the approach for the upcoming public presentations on Tuesday and Wednesday. During these evenings, each artist will share their work and receive feedback in a moderated format. The Beirut participants will also take an active role in guiding the audience through the process, helping to create a thoughtful and engaging space for dialogue.

Lors de cette session, les artistes sélectionnés de Beyrouth découvriront la méthode de feedback DasArts — une approche structurée et créative pour échanger autour des œuvres. Ensemble, ils co-construiront le cadre des présentations publiques qui auront lieu mardi et mercredi. Chaque soir, les artistes partageront leur travail et recevront des retours dans un format modéré. Les participants de Beyrouth joueront également un rôle actif en accompagnant le public dans cette démarche, afin de créer un espace d’échange à la fois réfléchi et vivant.

"How Am I Here?" Mey Seifan & Slowfuture is a transmedial performance by choreographer Mey Seifan, exploring the recurring nightmare of Syrians in exile. It begins with an ideal return home, but quickly turns into panic with disappearing passports, checkpoints, and trapped escape routes. The dream blurs languages and memories of exile, cycling into fear until the dreamer wakes up.
Premiered in 2023, the performance gained new significance after the fall of the Syrian regime in 2024, as many exiles noticed the nightmare's sudden disappearance. Combining choreography, AI, and virtual reality, it immerses audiences in the emotional turmoil of exile and explores how to reshape subconscious fears and reclaim agency.
One of the first of its kind in the Arabic world, "How Am I Here?" has been successfully presented at international festivals, engaging audiences with its powerful, immersive experience.

"How Am I Here ?" de Mey Seifan & Slowfuture est une performance transmédia de la chorégraphe Mey Seifan qui explore le cauchemar récurrent des Syriens en exil. Elle commence par un retour idéal à la maison, mais se transforme rapidement en panique avec des passeports disparus, des points de contrôle et des routes d'évasion bloquées. Le rêve brouille les langues et les souvenirs de l'exil, tournant en boucle dans la peur jusqu'à ce que le rêveur se réveille.

Présentée pour la première fois en 2023, la performance a pris un nouveau sens après la chute du régime syrien en 2024, lorsque de nombreux exilés ont remarqué la disparition soudaine de ce cauchemar. Alliant chorégraphie, IA et réalité virtuelle, elle plonge le public dans le tourment émotionnel de l'exil, visant à remodeler les peurs subconscientes et à récupérer son pouvoir.

L'une des premières de son genre dans le monde arabe, "How Am I Here ?" a été présentée avec succès dans de nombreux festivals internationaux, offrant une expérience immersive et puissante.

The spectator as an essential part of the creation: This process focuses on developing an awareness of how a performance engages its audience and how this interaction encourages active participation in a shared thought process. The workshop will focus on the energetic and physical vocabulary of the Company, and particularly on Flow, the piece inspired by animal’s group movements, such as shoals of fish or flocks of birds, which toured in Bipod in 20xx. The choreographic process questions the laws of interactions between the members of a group and the coordination of their movements, suggesting new choreographic dynamics based on collective consciousness in space. The workshop will be run by Marco Cantalupo, and Csaba Varga, dancer and assistant at Linga.

The workshop residency will focus on exploring various movement improvisations that engage with the architecture, or structural aspects of a building, or location. It can be both inside and outside, or in its surrounding area. Using the body as a tool, we will examine and rediscover the subtle details of a chosen place. By collecting these details and fostering a dialogue between the architecture and the body, we aim to generate new interpretations of the site. How can we uncover and reconnect with the past memories embedded within the structure of a building, or a situated area? 
This conversation aims to reinterpret the site and its stories, fostering new insights into its history and present. Can we create scenarios where both concrete and abstract relationships with the site place us in suspended time pockets, which allows us to transcend linear time offering alternative perspectives on current times we´re living in right now?

La résidence de l'atelier se concentrera sur l'exploration de diverses improvisations de mouvement qui interagissent avec l'architecture, ou les aspects structurels d'un bâtiment ou d'un lieu. Cela peut se dérouler aussi bien à l'intérieur qu'à l'extérieur, ou dans ses environs. En utilisant le corps comme outil, nous examinerons et redécouvrirons les détails subtils d'un endroit choisi. En recueillant ces détails et en favorisant un dialogue entre l'architecture et le corps, nous visons à générer de nouvelles interprétations du site. Comment pouvons-nous découvrir et nous reconnecter avec les souvenirs passés inscrits dans la structure d'un bâtiment ou d'une zone située ?
Cette conversation a pour objectif de réinterpréter le site et ses histoires, en offrant de nouvelles perspectives sur son histoire et son présent. Telescope Beirut is a one-week initiative within the Creative Europe project, SHIFT. It offers a unique lens to explore, magnify, and discover new perspectives in dance and performance. Artists selected from across Europe and the Mediterranean will be accompanied by a group of professionals to advise, support, and inspire their ongoing projects.
Taking place for the first time in Lebanon, Telescope Beirut offers a dynamic week of dance workshops, talks, discussions, studio presentations, and select performances in non-conventional spaces.
Telescope Beirut is an open creative platform and a space for artistic exchange for the local dance artists, professionals, amateurs, or simply anyone passionate about movement and performance. This is your chance to be part of an inspiring creative environment.

The "How to Create in the Aftermath of a Catastrophe" roundtable explores the intersections of art, public space, and crisis. It examines how art professionals navigate creation during ongoing emergencies—not just as a response to destruction but as a way to cultivate hope, reinvent common spaces, and activate resistance through participation, debate, and sharing. It raises ethical questions about representation, spectatorship, and the risk of aestheticizing trauma while considering how artistic interventions can challenge dominant power structures. Participants will discuss how catastrophe redefines artistic urgency, how performance reclaims public space, and how creative interventions foster long-term political impact.
Can we envision performance as a site of solidarity, where ephemeral acts of togetherness shape new social and artistic possibilities and leave lasting impacts in societies shaped by destruction?

Cette table ronde explore les intersections entre l'art, l'espace public et la crise. Elle examine comment les professionnels de l'art naviguent dans la création pendant les urgences en cours — non seulement en réponse à la destruction, mais aussi comme un moyen de cultiver l'espoir, de réinventer les espaces communs et d'activer la résistance à travers la participation, le débat et le partage. Elle soulève des questions éthiques sur la représentation, le spectateur et le risque d'esthétiser le traumatisme, tout en réfléchissant à la manière dont les interventions artistiques peuvent défier les structures de pouvoir dominantes. Les participants discuteront de la manière dont la catastrophe redéfinit l'urgence artistique, comment la performance réapproprie l'espace public et comment les interventions créatives favorisent un impact politique à long terme.

On-Site Exploration is the first activity of the Creative Europe project SHIFT. It will commence in Florence at FABBRICA EUROPA with the first gathering of all project partners, advisory board, invited resident artists, experts, and citizens. A four day gathering and exploration in order to investigate, rehearse, discuss and focus on exploring new politics of creation and shared relationships of performance spaces and artistic creations. 

On_Site Exploration est la première activité du projet Creative Europe SHIFT. Elle commencera à Florence, à FABBRICA EUROPA, avec la première rencontre de tous les partenaires du projet, du comité consultatif, des artistes en résidence invités, des experts et des citoyens. Ce rassemblement de quatre jours sera dédié à l'exploration, la répétition, la discussion et la concentration sur l'exploration de nouvelles politiques de création et des relations partagées entre les espaces de performance et les créations artistiques.
