Conceived as the final celebration of the European project SHIFT, this gathering reinvents the very notion of performance by questioning spatial hierarchies and dissolving the boundaries between stage and audience.

Bringing together choreographers, dancers, architects, poets, and thinkers from across Europe and the Mediterranean, Dance People – Le Happening becomes a living space of encounters, where artistic expression and civic participation enter into dialogue. The digital era is shaking up our habits and our fields of perception. But the digital world is also an opportunity to rethink our artistic practices. It offers and puts forward new modes of representation but also of presence in the world. It represents a powerful tool which can, if it is mastered, encourage artistic proliferation, access to culture but also allow a greater richness and openness to the world and reach new audiences.

Or first of all, what is the body, the consciousness, the cosmos?… During this afternoon it will be a question of investigating by practice and by theory, what these terms invite to explore and question at through the prism of three different areas: Zen, physics and dance. Starting from her artistic research through dance, Vania Vaneau, dancer and choreographer, invites Christophe Demur, Zen monk and Laurent Chevillard, researcher in physics and mathematics to share their practices and points of view on these themes.

How do artists work in a war zone? How can artists safeguard a culture under threat of annihilation? What does courage and daring mean in the context of a hostile invasion by a military force? The devastating war in Europe happening right now totally changes our notions of risk, care, support and the role of the artist for all of us. This conversation explores the impact of Russia’s war on two key figures in the dance world, and what they imagine will be the future of dance in Ukraine.

Cartes sur Table - a future for dance in Ukraine?

On February 24, 2022, on the evening of the day when Russia began its war of conquest with Ukraine, I urgently left Kyiv and went into forced isolation. Kyiv began to be shelled with cruise missiles and I moved to the village of Morozivka, 50 km from Kyiv. I thought life would be safer there.

A week later, the war was 20 km from the place where I stayed. Around the clock we heard explosions and shooting, and a week later we got used to these sounds. Already in early April, Ukrainian Army drove out Russian troops from nearby villages and it became quiet here. Gradually, I began to regain mobility in my body and come out of the stupor. Then I decided to shoot a few videos of improvisations in order to look at the bodily transformations that happened to me from the outside. All the time before that, I felt completely paralyzed - I couldn't force myself to move or do anything at all. The only thing I could do was writing poetry - suddenly the thoughts and the feelings began to take the form of words.

When I analyze my perception of events and information during this time, I get the impression that everything has become completely black and white. Halftones disappeared and all people were divided into "friends" and "foes". In texts, which I began to collect on Facebook, I was searching for these same halftones to bring the ability to feel back into my life. It also become the ability to preserve the imaginative perception of the world beyond good and evil.

I felt it was important to capture this moment. That`s how the movie come out of being isolated in war time.

Concerns OutLoud 

Abaya Road is the latest of Zeid Hamdan's projects. This umpteenth musical formation allows this hyperactive producer to have fun with pop and dancing remixes of great classics from the Lebanese, Syrian and Arab repertoire in general. He is accompanied this time by two young singers, Jeanne Humbert (John), harp guitarist with a fragile and suave voice and Celine Khoury who with nuance and assurance handles the different techniques of Arabic singing. But it will also be no surprise if the group launches into some reinterpretations of the great classics taken from some 20 albums that Hamdan has to his credit and from his many titles that marked the Lebanese post-war generation.

g r oo v e was born from an irrepressible desire to create a piece, where "grooving" is an imperative. Between a search for spontaneity, commitment and honesty, this solo testifies to an urgency: the urgency of writing, the urgency to freeze a movement in posterity.

This 18th edition of BIPOD takes place in Lyon & Beirut, with a live streaming program on Citerne.live digital platform. We gathered a program of performances, videos, discussions, debates, experiences and conversations around the thematic of #cultural_disobedience. Opening a discussion about culture in relation to several artistic, social, and political concerns is an urgency today. How culture can intervene and engage in the social and political without losing its artistic drive and questions. And how much cultural dynamics are reflecting a scene of inclusion and equality. What does it mean to be an artist? A programmer? And what does it even mean to be an ‘active’ audience and why? It seems there is a vital need, on an artistic and curatorial level, to rethink our approaches to culture and question current operating dynamics. Our aspiration is to explore how inspiring ideas, that materialized themselves in theatres, festivals, companies, and collectives, can continue to rejuvenate, revitalize themselves, and serve their innovative purposes.

And from F Peyrard’s strong desire to share a certain vision of mourning through wilderness. M Gozy supported these intuitions with his imagination and his sensitivity towards camera work assisted by B. Fiche’s technicity. Grief

BLANC is based on a research about ritual, trance and transformation. Trying to peel the layers of the body and its environment revealing the multiple faces that composes the individual in the same way white color is made of all the other colors. The change of skin, the figure of the shaman. 
The body is crossed by fluxus of energies and images. It is, in one side, material and limited, and on the other side utopic, multiple and infinite. Moving between the strata of a continuum that goes from reality to fiction, from present to imaginary, and from rational to irrational. Voted "best first film" at the Hiroshima Film Festival in 2008, "Le Coeur est un Métronome" tells the story of an angry father arguing with his son. The relationship between the two men is so tense that they can no longer understand each other.

“It seems that the real struggle of culture is to formulate a new perception beyond the fixed labels of power and domination. An ecological as well as a human discourse. Culture and thought must renew themselves outside of the inherited structures of the current economic, political and social structures.“

For the opening of BIPOD 2020 the directors of the Beirut International Platform of Dance, Mia Habis & Omar Rajeh, would like to address their audience on this 16th edition, which is taking place in very special circumstances and times. 

They will be joined by dance activist Peggy Olislaegers who accompanied Omar and Mia through the whole concept of this year's edition, sharing a space for thoughts and the three of them wanted to extend the invitation to all the guests speakers of BIPOD 2020. 

On this opening, 10 international guest artists will individually share a concern about culture, society, dance, thought, risk, and relationships.
